Projeto Queto, Sampaio

Background Projeto Queto

In 2006, the founder and leader of Nação, Francisco da Silva, first expressed his long-time dream to start a graffiti project in the neighbourhood where he grew up Sampaio, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro. He had been working as a graffiti teacher in other favelas for many years, but felt he never made a contribution to his own people.

He turned to Caramundo to assist him. Step by step, we developed the plan to start Projeto Queto. In 2008, together with the local community leaders we established the long-planned Cultural Centre, ‘Projeto Queto’ in Sampaio. The Centre was partly financed by the Dutch Governmental Institute NCDO Building Bridges and Plan Nederland.

Workshops

In our Centre, we provide a wide variety of workshops to motivated youths. The centre is operated by local leaders of “Morro do Queto”, the area within Sampaio in which the centre is situated. When necessary, the centre hires teachers to teach classes in specialized fields. Most classes however are taught by local professionals and Nação members.

We offer workshops in:

  • Graffiti
Members of Nação provide graffiti workshops. Students learn how to draw, develop various types of logos and letters, how to use colour and composition, and how to paint large surfaces. Students also learn the basic techniques of graphic design, motion graphics and video and audio-editing, opening up the long term prospect of a career in graphic design (for example for t-shirts or flyers).
  • Audio production
The Nação crew also counts DJ’s and sound engineers in its midst, who offer audio production workshops in Projeto Queto. In these workshops youth learn the basic techniques of producing a digitial audio-track. Various musical genres and rhythms are analysed and they learn the technical skills of building a sound system. In the long run, these skills can be applied towards becoming stage technicians for music theatres in town, or working for larger sound-systems in the area.
  • Computer skills
Projeto Queto contains a computer department with internet access, and workshops are provided to young people on basic computer-, internet- and administration skills as well as step by step design programs such as photoshop and illustrator.
  • Silkscreen printing/sewing
Our partner organization MiCamichula built a silkscreen printing atelier in the centre. In addition, they set up a series of silkscreen workshops. MiCamichula teaches youth the basic skills of t-shirt design, step by step.
  • Sewing and Fashion Design Atelier
Projeto Queto is in the process of creating a sewing studio, where local youths can learn how to design and produce clothing that they subsequently can sell.

Through our workshops and courses, we encourage motivated youths to stay away from drug traffic, prostitution and organized crime. Moreover, we offer a helping hand in the creative and constructive process of producing commercial products, finding jobs in the labour market in Rio or setting up small businesses.
