In 2004, as part of one of our exchange programs, we invited Wesley Denílio, a young rapper and talented filmmaker from the favela Acarí in Rio de Janeiro, together with his rap companion Mano P Black and their DJ and 2 graffiti writers from Nação, to the Netherlands.

During a month, the group worked together with a group of rappers and graffiti writers from the city of Rotterdam. They recorded music and were invited to paint murals in several of the larger cities in the Netherlands.

During his stay in the Netherlands, Wesley established a network of contacts that would later serve him in establishing his educational projects.

In 2007 Wesley won a scholarship for the Film Academy of Estácio in Rio de Janeiro. We introduced Wesley to the Dutch broadcasting company VPRO, in connection with its new Dutch TV program Metropolis TV. The VPRO hired Wesley as a reporter. The Metropolis network is a worldwide collective of video journalists and filmmakers and works with over 50 filmmakers from different parts of the world.

Wesley was able, to establish a hip-hop-house in his favela. He was founder the educative project Quinto Elemento: Consciência. In both these projects he uses hip-hop as a “tool” to stimulate information

Together with his partner Deley de Acari, Wesley selects and supports talented kids in attending Pré-Vestibular courses that allow these kids to attend the federal university free of charge.
