Favela Soccer Competition, Sampaio
In the favelas of Sampaio, Matriz and São João, until 2006 only a neglected, run down soccer field existed. At the urgent request of the locals of Sampaio, Caramundo assisted in the lobbying for, and implementation of, an action plan to upgrade the soccer field and the abandoned swimming pool of the sports centre of the area. We supported young leaders in obtaining the means and skills to maintain the grounds and organize the currently largest favela soccer competition of Rio de Janeiro.
The soccer competition, as well as the accompanying cultural activities, has become hugely popular within the favelas of all Rio de Janeiro.
During the competition, teams from different (often rivaling) favelas play against each other. The coordinators of the soccer field, together with the team captains, established very strict codes of conduct to be adhered to during the games. Fair play and respect are required at all times.
The competition has had a positive impact on teams (and their supporters) from rivaling favelas: most of them have reconciled after playing against each other, and discovered they have more in common than they previously realized.
Every day, soccer training sessions take place for youth (boys and girls) and adults between 9 am and 5 pm. These training sessions are provided by local soccer players. In the swimming pool, locals provide swimming classes to children and youth.
The soccer field serves as a safe haven and social meeting point for team members’ friends and family. Every weekend, around 500 people frequent the field.
