MiCamichula
MiCamichula is a Dutch non-profit organization and close partner of Caramundo that provides workshops that teach young people how to create their own t-shirts using photography, graphic design and silkscreen printing. MiCamichula is responsible for the silk screen workshops in Rio de Janeiro.
Silkscreen Workshop
The print on the t-shirt is based on photographs taken by the youngsters themselves who seek inspiration from their own surroundings. After an introduction into graphic design and photography they learn to view their own surroundings and culture more consciously and capture it in a different way. The resulting photo’s are the basis for the prints as we teach them how you can transform a photo into an print.
They walk around their neighborhood and take pictures of anything they find interesting. The best photo’s are translated into graphic designs, teaching them how a few small adjustments can transform a regular photo into an amazing print.
To get the print on the t-shirt we use silkscreen printing. After explaining the different steps of silkscreen printing, the workshop participants experiment with the silkscreen, using different paint colors and methods. Finally, this results in the creation of their own unique t-shirts.
Goal
The goal of the project is to inspire underprivileged young people to express their creativity and to enhance their self-esteem. They are stimulated to develop and visualize their own ideas and create their own design, which reflects their unique story. At the same time MiCamichula aims at providing young people with the opportunity to earn a living. To make this possible MiCamichula has started building professional silk-screen printing studios where young people can design and produce their t-shirts independently.
